Des Horsfall has played with various Roots/Country-Rock band line-ups since the late 70s, and has had, in his own words, “a few skirmishes with fame”.
In the mid 80s he fronted Blues-Rock band ‘Raw Deal’ that was managed by the legendary Alexis Korner, until his untimely death.
In the 1990s Des regularly appeared in hit videos on CMT, and as opening act for Joe Ely, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, and Chuck Prophet amongst many others.
After a decade of studio engineering and production work at his own analogue recording facility (Valve Studios), Des ‘reemerged’ with his new ‘Rustic Rock n Roll’ outfit ‘Des Horsfall’s KUSCHTY RYE’ and critically acclaimed (Ronnie Lane/Slim Chance inspired) albums ‘The Good Gentleman’s Tonic’, and ‘The Bastard’s Tin’, which form parts 1 & 2 of the Kuschty Rye Trilogy.
Horsfall embarked on the Kuschty Rye project in 2008 on hearing the album “Anymore for Anymore” – “It was the kind of music that I had always dreamed about making – the kind of music that “touched your very soul” – the kind of music that made you feel glad to be alive!”
Puzzled by the fact that so few people were aware of this music, or even who Ronnie Lane was, and what he had achieved, and bewildered that the Slim Chance albums were out of print and unavailable to buy ; Determined to right this wrong, he started his mission to take this music back to the people.
Des wanted an audience to feel the same way that he did when he listened to the rustic rock n roll that Ronnie had played on “Anymore For Anymore”.The recordings, at Valve Studio’s followed :
“The Good Gentlemans Tonic” (released 2011) features Slim Chance members Benny Gallagher, Charlie Hart and Steve Simpson, and was described by Ronnie’s old mate Pete Townshend as ” a killer record….KILLER!”.
“The Bastard’s Tin” (released 2014) features The Who’s Pete Townshend, who was so blown away by the first album that he contributed lead guitar and vocal on a song co-written with Ronnie Lane’s former wife & muse, Kate Lane.
Kate’s additional input on “The Bastard’s Tin” album has been invaluable, and gives the listener a unique insight into the life of Ronnie Lane.
The last part of the trilogy – “The Troubadours Entourage” is well underway …
Des is currently undertaking acoustic duo dates with various guests and occasional ‘full band’ and solo gigs .
Des has regularly performed as a duo with Dan Raza, Tim O’Connor, Nick Hall,
Other projects of note are :
Available Jones – Classic Rock band, formed by ex Dirty Tryx members Neil Howarth, and Jon Cane.
Slim Chance – Occasional member of Ronnie Lane’s band, Slim Chance.
